This account of the band has been gleaned from the minutes of band meetings and correspondence files by former secretary and band member, Lynley Watts. It was originally written for the bands’ 50th anniversary celebrations in 2014 but has been updated to include more recent events.
The history of the Mainland Big Band spans several decades, from its origins as a military-style ensemble to the resilient, modern dance band it is today. Explore our journey through the eras below.

The Early Years (1964-1973)
The formation of the band from a military ensemble, early performances, and massive fundraising efforts. -
Evolution & A New Home (1974-1989)
Acquiring our own hall on Aldwins Road and transitioning into a structured dance band named the Garden City Big Band. -
Upheaval & Rebirth (1990-1995)
Navigating through turbulent times in the 1990s, changing directors, and registering formally as Mainland Big Band Inc. -
Stability & Celebration (1996-2009)
A new stable era featuring tea dances, vocalists, the 40th anniversary, and major refurbishments to the hall. -
Resilience & The Modern Era (2010-Present)
Enduring the Canterbury earthquakes, moving to new premises, and continuing to perform up to the present day.
